Global beauty

By Olympia Colandrea

Once a year, the amazing beauty industry brings artists together from all over the world under one roof to show off what they have mastered and put together for the coming year.

This October, the event, sponsored by the global leader in color, Goldwell, was held at the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles. It is not only exciting traveling to this event in different parts of the world every year (the 2012 event was in London and the 2014 event will be in Berlin) but we're able to meet talented individuals from all over and get to share their vision, and celebrate the passion we all share for this wonderful industry.

The talent that is brought together in one place is simply amazing. Each year, there is a different theme for each night of the event. The first night was called Hollywood Glam. We had a red carpet event and we all got to dress up in our finest red carpet attire.

The winners of the Talent Competition were announced on the second night (the USA won the gold in the master category, and I was extremely excited and proud for that).

KMS, which is a partner with Goldwell, had a night of fun and fashion for us at the Belasco Theater. The theme was Urban Cool. We all got to dress and express ourselves in urban cool attire and party the night away.

As much fun as the parties were, the event brought something else to the people who attended. It reminded them of what a wonderful industry they belong to and how lucky they are to work at something they really love. The creativity we saw not only at the Talent Competition but from the attendees of the event really gets you to see what we, as hairstylists and colorists, are intended to do.

This means not just having our clients coming in to get a haircut or coloring, but what we, as artists, can offer them such as ideas on how to incorporate the look that they prefer.

From everyday living to going out for a night out on the town or a special occasion, we want our clients to know it's about them. It's about the look you want for that special night whether it's Hollywood Glam, Halloween Fright Night, a Wedding or just a decision to change your look all together.

The greatest thing about being in this industry is the chance to go in any direction you want. I love this industry, I love hair, I love changes, and I love to create the new you.

Until next time remember, look your best... Feel your best... But, most of all, love yourself.

Split ends

By Olympia Colandrea

Are you getting a haircut often like you should? Your hair designer likes to pre-book you for your next appointment so you don't forget to come in to get your hair color and the ends trimmed. But, because you don't like short hair, you never allow them to cut as much as necessary.

Finally, Brazilian Blow Out has introduced a Split End Repairing Treatment! This protein-enriched technology binds together damaged ends along with a super nutrient complex to smooth the cuticle. It is the only product in salon treatment that instantly will strengthen, repair, seal and protect your ends for four to five weeks and will continue to improve your hair with each treatment.

We all know how hot tools can be damaging for our hair, but we still need to curl or put just a bit of extra heat to them to get the look we like and want. But those split ends just don't look good!

Now, with the Brazilian Blow Out Split Ends Treatment, you can go a bit longer until your next two-inch haircut. You can enjoy the length without your hair looking weak or broken because this new invention will reconstruct and repair it all.

This treatment is best for people who want to improve the condition and integrity of their hair or repair chemically treated hair. You can expect healthier, stronger ends with less breakage.

Split End Repairing Treatment can be added after your color or highlights service; just come in for it or it can be done in between your services. It will only take about 20 to 30 minutes, and it won't put a strain on your finances as the whole treatment is not more than about $85.

Until next time look your best...feel your best... but most of all love yourself...

Face Cleansing

BY OLYMPIA COLANDREA

I never knew how important cleansing the face with the right stuff and doing it the right way really is, but it definitely makes a huge difference.

My esthetician put me on a regimen with face and eye creams based on my skin type and concerns, and set me up for my microdermabrasion facial every five to six weeks. I was on it -- and my skin looked and felt amazing. I saw the difference and loved all of it...until recently.

I just visited the Dermalogica Skin Institute with some of my members and learned a few extra tips and all of sudden my skin looked even better!  I was definitely using the correct creams and cleansers prescribed to me but what I found out was the way I was using my cleansers wasn't as effective as it could be.

I wasn't activating the ingredients before applying it to my face! Yes, I use two different types of cleansers but what I wasn't doing was mixing them with water to emulsify them for about thirty to forty seconds before applying it to my face, neck and décolleté, using circular motions for about 30 to 60 seconds. Then I had to rinse well and cleanse again.

Cleansing is important because this removes makeup, dirt and debris which can prevent your products from being absorbed into your skin.

You will see the difference after you apply your face cream and eye cream. Your face will have a great glow and you will feel as if you got some color, but what it really is, is your skin being cleansed and stimulated.

You will have smooth skin with a natural glow that everyone will compliment you on. Try it and you'll see.

Until next time, look your best, feel your best, but most of all love yourself!!!!

Ditch The Needles

By Olympia Colandrea  |

Thinking about Botox? Let’s ditch the needles and reverse the signs of aging with the new non-abrasive Elōs™ Technology by Syneron®/Candela®. You can have the same results without the pain and bruising that comes with using Botox and the associated needles.

The Elōs™ Technology is a combination of laser and bio-polar radio frequency energy that enables you to achieve a more youthful appearance with little or no downtime at all.

The two treatments offered with this technology are called Sublative™ and Sublime™.

Sublative™ treatment has minimal down time and typically takes only 10 to 20 minutes per session. It's good for all skin types. It uses radio frequency energy that is precisely directed to the skin area being treated. The treatment helps stimulate the production of new collagen and healthy skin cells. It smooth out lines of mild to moderate wrinkles and reduces skin discoloration. Skin texture becomes smoother and more elastic.

I've read the testimonials of doctors and aestheticians from all over the globe and the results they report are very impressive but seeing is believing. We have treated costumers at Da Noi on Fifth that had loose skin on the neck and belly area due to weight loss. After only three treatments the skin was firmer and smoother. The treatment also drastically minimizes the effects of acne scarring. The results are truly amazing.

Sublime™ treatment on the other hand combines safe and effective levels of infrared and bipolar radio-frequency energy. Sublime™ is a painless and fast treatment for wrinkles and skin contouring. It has immediate, visible results and unlike conventional skin treatments, this treatment does not hurt. There is no downtime with the Sublime™ treatment. You're good to go right after the treatment.

Sublime™ can also be used to treat all skin types for sagginess and loss of elasticity. Treatments can be done on the face, neck, or other areas of the body.

If you're interested in achieving a smoother and more youthful appearance, then these treatments are perfect for you. If you have any questions email me at  olympia@danoionfifth.com

Until next week, remember, look your best...feel your best...but most of all, love yourself...

Color Transition

By Olympia Colandrea  |

Now that the kids are back to school and fall is upon us, let’s work on getting our new fall hair color. It’s that time of the year to make changes with our face and body creams, make-up, wardrobe and hair color. We go out and buy new clothes because we like the new fashion trends or just because we want a new look. It’s the same for hair color.

Hair color is an art. Let a professional tailor the perfect hair color for you to compliment your skin tone, your hair texture and give you hair some dimension. Allow him or her to harmonize your new color with your natural coloring.

Whether you go bold or subdued, we as colorists like to customize your color to create a shade that is your own, combining multiple hues and application techniques to achieve your unique palette.

We love to see our clients enjoy a bit of glamour and to turn some heads. Here are some secrets to hair color success.

My suggestions are when searching for a new color:

•Bring pictures from the Internet, magazines, friends’ pictures, etc.

•Share your lifestyle with your colorist, so he or she can guide you to select a color that compliments you and fits your budget.

•And, most importantly, find a professional salon with highly trained colorists.

The box color will only get you one color lift. It’s like one size fits all. As a professional, we can choose the right lift that best matches the percentage of gray and hair type each individual has to achieve the desired color shade.

We can send you home with the right color shampoo and conditioners that reduce the fading process. Our Fade Stop Shampoo by GOLDWELL locks in the color molecules while it conditions and intensifies color brilliance. This can keep the look of your freshly colored hair at home so you can enjoy the beautiful fall colors that you have chosen.

If you have any questions, feel free to email me at  Olympia@danoionfifth.com .

Until next week remember: Look your best. Feel your best. Most of all, love yourself.

Summer Glow

By Olympia Colandrea  |

With the summer in full swing, now is the perfect time to have the perfect summer glow!

Most of us love summer clothes, skirts, dresses, shorts and tank tops; with that said, we are showing more skin. Don't we want our skin to be glowing?

Unfortunately we all know how damaging sun exposure is, but we still love to be sun-kissed a bit. By using an SPF of 30 or more, we can still get some of that good old vitamin D and a bit of color, so those great colorful summer clothes will look even better.

Those of us that don't like sunbathing or just don’t have the time to go to the beach or pool, but still want that summer glow, can get it too! With spray tanning, in my opinion the greatest invention ever, it can be done weekly and can be customized to your desired shade.

In between, if you feel your face is losing color more quickly than your body, you can use a spray mist; my favorite is NORVEL SUN.

But, remember, whether you sunbath or spray tan, a successful summer glow is accomplished by exfoliating your skin. You should exfoliate once a week to ensure you have an even top layer of skin.

Use a gentle body polish the night before to remove any dead skin cells, and don't forget to pay special attention to those dry areas: feet, elbows, knees and hands. Before any spray tan is done, apply a light layer of moisturizer to those areas to prevent uneven tones.

Another great product to help revive dull, dry skin, giving it a natural summer glow to highlight the skin, is by BENEFIT. It’s available in two shades. One is a slight pink glow called HIGH BEAM, which is for lighter skin that has red or pink pigment, and the other is a goldish apricot tone called MOON BEAM for darker skin with yellow or olive pigment, which illuminates and adds a warm shimmer.

Just take a bit of your normal face cream -- about the size of a dime -- in your hands and mix two to three drops of one of the beautiful highlights by blending it across the upper cheeks and the arch of your brow. It will brighten your skin and will give it a lifted, youthful look.

Until next week, remember, look your best…feel your best… but most of all, love yourself...

Summer Hair

By Olympia Colandrea  |

Want Beautiful Beach Waves? Or Smooth Silky Hair?

Our hair is dehydrated than due to harsh shampoos, blow-drying, hot irons, perms, pollution, or simply over-shampooing. Come summer, add sun exposure, chlorine and salt water to the mix.

Having beautiful hair in the summer doesn’t mean we have to make sacrifices. All we need are the right products and these special tips to keep our hair its healthiest!

Start by protecting your hair from sun exposure. "It’s A 10" or “Uniq1” are fantastic leave-in detangling conditioners with UV protectants, also great for over-processed hair.

For curly hair, use a curl specific cream or mousse. Creams tend to provide more moisture needed for curly hair; a great brand to try is “Moroccan Oil.”

If your hair has little or no curl, apply products such as KMS’s “Dry Wax” and “Sea Salt Spray” to towel-dried hair to get that sexy, undone, tousled look.

Also, using a curl-activating product with a diffuser can make all the difference. First apply your products, then diffuse hair on low heat. If hair is a bit thin at the top, give some height by lifting your hair about an inch away from your scalp with your fingertips.

Remember; NEVER run your fingers through curly hair. The curl is formed while your hair is drying. Running your hand through your curls will cause frizz, a big no-no!

The straight look for the summer can be hard to get or maintain. A great suggestion is the Keratin or Brazilian Blowout treatment (a non-damaging protein treatment used to control frizz and repair damaged hair.) Plus, it cuts down blow-drying time by 50 percent!

Alternatively, you can use a smoothing serum before blow drying. My personal favs are Semi Di Lino by Alfaparf  or Hot Flex by KMS.

Always use the right shampoo for your hair type. Ask your hairdresser for his or her recommendation, so you don't waste money picking up the wrong product.

Thick, coarse and frizzy hair needs moisturizing shampoo and conditioner. Those stating repair for damaged and dry hair may not be right for you. They will end up causing product build-up on your hair which you don’t need. Repair shampoos and conditioners are for dry hair due to damage.

Don’t be afraid to use a dry shampoo between washings. There are many great ones, like KMS Dry Shampoo or EVO.

Remember, your hair is like your body. Use the right products and take a little time to style it. Don’t ignore it, and see how many compliments you’ll get.

Look your best... Feel your best... Most of all, love yourself!

Problems with Thinning Hair?

By Olympia Colandrea  |

Do you feel like your hair is getting thinner or just stopped growing?

Eating healthily is the first step; make sure you have enough nutrients in your diet. Next, try taking a hair supplement like Biotin or ULTRA HAIR, which can be found in most health food stores.

What I’m most excited to share with all of you is a great product called REVITA by DS LABORATORIES, which is a high performance hair growth technology shampoo with a conditioner to follow, as well as what I call, the “miracle treatment.”

DS Labs offers a variety of these “miracle treatments” to meet that the needs of every individual from treatments such as the RS formulated specially for women experiencing hair loss, to DNC-N for advanced stages of baldness, which contains five percent Nanoxidil, a powerful alternative to the better known Minoxidil.

Unlike Minoxidil, Nanoxidil does not have any side effects and is safe for virtually anyone! It gets sprayed on to the scalp after you shampoo, condition, rinse and towel dry your hair; simply leave it on and style your hair as usual.

This amazing product has a three-month money-back guarantee from the company; if you don't see any results, the company will give you a full refund. You must be consistent with it. I personally saw results with it in the first four months; my hair is growing faster than usual and feels thicker than ever.

A tip I share with my clients is never put any styling products directly on the scalp; products are made for the hair only and will clog your pores, preventing new hair from growing in.

When dealing with thinning hair, you want to make sure that your scalp stays clean and free of products. By stimulating your scalp, during a shampoo you can achieve just that.

Thinning hair occurs for many reasons, but whatever your case may be, keep your scalp clean, and give it the nutrients it needs.

Remember, hair falls out every day.  This is a normal process. For every hair we lose, there should be another to follow. If you see more hair than usual falling out, don't wait. Do something about it.

If you have any questions feel free to email me at  olympia@danoionfifth.com .

Summer Skin Rejuvenation

By Olympia Colandrea  |

I just returned back from vacationing in Italy and after enjoying the Mediterranean Sea and the hot summer days on a beautiful beach, a few hours of my first day home were devoted to getting myself together before returning to work and taking care of the needs of my friends/ clients.

I began by getting my body and face smooth with a body scrub given by a massage therapist at my salon. My favorite is the body nourishing scrub which revives skin radiance and smoothness while polishing away the dryness and flakiness that occur when you’re exposed to a strong sun.

Another treatment is a sea salt mineral scrub which stimulates circulation, lifts away dead skin and boosts absorption of treatments products. I noticed that all the moisturizer I use is not being absorbed by my skin so this treatment will help alleviate that problem.

The next step requires moving onward to the next room to get a microdermabrasion facial which consists of a hydration mask, face and neck massage, and then finishes with a skin resurfacing.

At my salon, I only recommend and use a DiamondTone microdermabrasion system which is a crystal-free, exfoliating technique that gently vacuums away dead cells in a controlled manner.

It reduces the effect of aging on your skin and it gives your face a healthier and firmer appearance. This treatment can be also used on the face, neck, chest, hands, back, legs, elbows and feet. It is also designed for acne and decreases skin blotchiness and hyper-pigmentation.

Let's face it, young fresh looking skin is what we aim to achieve every day, and with the help and advice of your well-trained aesthetician, you can definitely accomplish that. So now I'm ready to go back to work feeling relaxed, fresh and smooth all over.

Until next week, look your best....feel your best... But most of all love yourself.

Sun-kissed Hair

By Olympia Colandrea  |

Still enjoying the best of the Mediterranean waters and the islands of Naples Bay, I can't help but notice the sun-kissed hair of the locals which gives them that beautiful summer time look.

Combined with those deep tan bodies, the look is to die for. It really doesn't matter if you have virgin hair naturally sun-kissed or you let a professionally trained colorist/stylist create that look for you, your hair still needs to be properly maintained and cared for.

Don't forget that the sun dries out the hair and it can get very brassy, which we don't want to happen. By asking your hair professional to apply a conditioning glaze every three to four weeks for 10 to 20 minutes, it will replenish the shine as well as add a bit of color to your hair that the sun and waters pull out.

In between glazings, I recommend and use on my clients Goldwell and EVO anti brass conditioning when they need it.

By getting professionally applied glazing, keeping up your hair at home or if you're away by using the proper shampoo suggested by your colorist/stylist, along with trimming the ends, your hair will have that healthy, glowing look.

You and everyone else will see the difference when you let your hair down for those fabulous summer night gatherings.

Until next week, look your best.....feel your best.....but most of all love yourself.

To all future brides!

By Olympia Colandrea  |

As a professional in bridal hairstyles for the past 25 years, I have worked together with some amazing and talented makeup artists and still do.

Today, I would like to give some of our future brides that are uncertain of the look that they are going for some advice.

Before you go and pick out a dress or headpiece, research and try to see what look you going for. Before you shop for headpieces, decide if you want to wear your hair in an updo or loose down.

Always do a makeup and hair tryout at the same time so you can see the complete look and so you can see exactly if you are comfortable with that look.

What I suggest to all my brides before the tryout, is to do research to see different hairstyles and makeup looks you may like. Pictures are the key to a successful tryout.

Don't get discouraged if it doesn’t work out the first time. Sometimes, you may like something you see on someone else but it doesn't work out on you. There’s no reason to worry. It’s better to find that out a few weeks beforehand than on the big day, right?

Ask for a consultation before your tryout with your hairstylist so you will come prepared for that day. You may like a look that may need some extensions or you may need a shaping, so again the look you want can be enhanced.

Remember to prepare for that special day. Look for pictures of the look you going for, book a consultation and don't wait for the last minute to book your appointment.

Remember… look your best.... feel your best... most of all, love yourself.

Until next week.

Looking Va va voom on vacation

By Olympia Colandrea  |

I’ve just finished touring Northern  Italy and from magical Bellaggio on the shores of Lake Como (still looking for George Clooney! ), to the  hills outside of Verona where the great Valpolicella wine is produced, to the history and beauty of Venice, I have to state that the saying "Bella Italia" couldn't be more appropriate.

As much as the natural beauty of this or any other region can't be overlooked, I also love to observe the styles and fashion of the particular areas that I travel to.

What I notice is that, no matter where I go, people always want to look and feel their best. It's a natural expression of an individual’s inner feeling and confidence.

I love giving tips on  how to make you hair look the best, how to make you skin glow, how to transition hair color from season to season, but the beauty that's inside each of us is as important as all the beauty tips one receives.

The way I see it, we as individuals, to feel good in our skin, must be honest and ask ourselves what do we need? Is it our weight? Is it the way our skin is looking? Is it the everyday aches and pains you feel? Is it time to change our wardrobe or do we need to communicate with our hair stylist to get a new chic look?

Let's pay attention to our inner voice. Don't ignore it. More often than not, it's right. Yes, we lead  a very busy and hectic life and often  feel that we don't have enough time or energy to take care of our needs.

Make the time. Don't forget that taking care of your needs is as important, if not more so, than all the other obligations you might have. Remember, if you feel good inside and out you will be a much happier person, and I'm a believer that happiness is contagious.

Look your best.....feel your best...but most of all love yourself.....

CIAO... until next week.

How to look for the right hair cut!

  By Olympia Colandrea  |

When one of my clients sits in my chair for a consultation before her haircut, my first question is "are you ready for a change?" Most of the time, people ask what I have in mind or they say yes, but they don't know where to start.

First, it's very important to find a style that compliments the shape of your face and works with your career. Most importantly, make sure the style you like is going to work for your hair type.

Your stylist will analyze your hair first to see if the style you wish to have is going to work for you, I'm very honest with my clients and it’s a heartbreaker when someone brings me a picture of a desired style and she isn’t a candidate for it.

Many times, the texture of your hair and realistically how much time you spend a day on styling your hair could determine whether you can make that style work or not.

As a professional, I will always look for a solution, and share it with my clients whether it is to suggest a smoothing treatment such as Keratin or the Brazilian Blowout if their hair is too wiry or to recommend a blowout product to make their life easier once they go home and try to style it themselves, or a maybe even a volumizer to give their hair more texture if they don't have it.

Product suggestions are most important to make the style work, along with the time you spend on styling your hair daily.

Before you make a decision, speak to your hair stylist, share what you have in mind and listen for suggestions that work best for you. Together, you will have a successful new look.

But remember, hair grows out. If you see that it becomes harder for you to style, it's probably time for a trim. Good luck!

Look your best…feel your best… but most of all, love yourself...

How to grow out your haircut!

By Olympia Colandrea  |

Every day at least one of my many clients ask me " I would like to grow out my hair for a new look, how do I do it?" I always recommend my short hair clients to get a trim every 4 to 5 weeks no later than that, because short hair gets out of shape faster than shoulder length or long hair, which usually can be about 8 to 10 weeks before it looks out of shape and the ends need to be refreshed.

My advice to clients with short hair trying to grow it out is to skip the cut for about 6 to 8 weeks, give the hair a chance to get to the next length and then if you have layers just cut the length in the back until the sides meet with the back but at the same time shape up the layers so it falls better. In between if you can’t get your hair to behave and you are going out for the night, just get a professional blow out, the in between stages can be rough if you don't get it shaped, your stylist can help you through it. Don't try to do it by yourself for over 6 to 8 weeks because it can get frustrating and you may end up giving up and cutting it, be patient and let us professionals help you.

Until next week remember

Look your best…Feel your best… but most of all, love yourself...

Tired of shaving? Hair today, gone tomorrow!

By Olympia Colandrea  |

Now that summer's over and we're all done getting that beautiful suntan at the beach or pool, it is the time to get started on removing that unwanted hair from our body. You not must not have any suntan at all, not even from a tanning salon, or the skin may burn during laser hair removal treatment.

Let’s face it; most of us don't like body hair. We all want smooth skin with no stubs.

Laser hair removal is the best invention ever to get rid of unwanted hair. Waxing may be less expensive for one treatment but if you need or want numerous treatments to get rid of unwanted hair, laser hair removal is not only less painful but in the long run it might even cost less.

Laser hair removal is the best alternative to either shaving or waxing. Your skin is left smooth and silky. You don't feel any hair stubs. Your skin elasticity is not being compromised from the pulling associated with waxing.

Even though you may need several treatments with laser, you will see the difference in hair growth after the first one. You will have less hair and the little that grows back will be much thinner.

After completing the entire treatment process, your hair should not grow back for an extended time period, which for some people could be years.

You will probably need some follow-up visits every few months to maintain that smooth, silky look.  Speak to a certified laser technician to see how many treatments you may need.

Remember, since summer is over, this is the best time to get started on your laser hair treatment. There are many different types of laser hair removal equipment ranging from small hand-held devices that are not very effective to stand-alone machines that cost up to $100,000.

One such high-end machine which is used at Da Noi on Fifth is the Candela GentleLASE. It has a high energy laser that creates a beam of high-intensity light that penetrates deep into skin tissue where it delivers a controlled amount of therapeutic heat.

Candela's patented Dynamic Cooling Devise (DCD) technology protects the upper layers of your skin with a cooling burst of cryogen. Together, the long-pulse laser and DCD cooling offer optimal treatment with minimal side effects.

It will take approximately six treatments to achieve the desired results, but in the long term you will end up with smooth, hairless skin without the pain and cost of waxing.

Until next week, look your best...feel your best. But, most of all, love yourself.
